A few decades ago, credit was more of a serious matter, and it was sign of a person’s financial knowledge and sophisticationto be in possession of a credit card, and to know how to use credit cards, and to be aware of the limits of your credit lines, and that they should be respected. Much in the same way that there were values about saving, thrift, and spending on what was built to last, credit cards were part of that mix.With the advent of the 1980, an era of easy credit began, with a new explosion of credit card companies offering new ways to get and use credit, new ways to build credit lines into our lives (home equity, student loans, student loan consolidation). We were becoming a world of consumer products, hi tech gadgets, and wonderful things to eat, not prepared in the home. The no annual fee credit card emerged, with the illusion of free credit, and before long, every bank, credit union.

Now, credit card usage has spun out of control for many, and the basics that govern how to use credit wisely, and to manage it are sometimes lost. Worse, our college graduates leave school burdened with debt that no one counseled them how to properly use in the first place. Our children learn how to drive cars, and use computers, but they don’t learn the basics of money. This skill, budgeting, using credit cards and credit lines, obtaining mortgages, and saving for the future are simple, but overlooked skills. No annual fee credit cards are not necessarily a good resource, nor are they always bad. But how do you know the rules, the basics, the simple facts?
